EXTERNAL
LIGHTING
Thieves feel less vulnerable when they can work under cover of darkness.
External lighting can be used to deter intruders by creating a sense of exposure
and to increase the probability that they will be detected.
Security lighting can substantially reduce the risk of crime both as a deterrent
and psychologically. It also helps passers-by and local residents to notice
suspicious activity.
An obvious extension of this improved natural surveillance is the enhanced
performance of any Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system in operation with
increased lighting levels offering a greater clarity of image.
Security lighting may be permanently lit during the hours of darkness, possibly
linked to light sensitive switches. Another method is lighting linked to Passive
Infra Red (PIR) detectors or microwave detectors, which will activate security
lights instantly highlighting an intruder's presence. Tungsten lighting is
the most common and cost effective.
It is important that insufficient or poorly positioned lighting does not create
shadows. Security lighting can also be used in conjunction with alarm systems
or designed to activate independently, and together form an effective means
of deterrence or detection.
Light fittings themselves are vulnerable and should be:
> Inaccessible, except by ladder or tower
> Attached to buildings rather than columns
> Anti-vandal
and impact resisting, small and flush fitting
> Extremely robust if they must be within reach
of hand or foot
> Of a type with remote or well protected control
gear
