COMPUTER
EQUIPMENT
Many businesses now rely on computers to carry out a range of tasks. Modern
offices use copiers, computers, printers, fax machines etc, which are all
attractive targets for thieves.
The loss of the data held on computer or the inconvenience caused by the loss
of such equipment may have an impact on the business which far exceeds the
cost of replacement.
Important data, software and computer programmes should be backed up or copied
onto a suitable storage system and stored in a secure place away from the
building in which it is used.
When possible, data should only be used in private areas. It should not be
possible for unauthorised persons to view data on a casual basis. Passwords
should be used to prevent random viewing of files.
> Have a secure computer room or alternatively
keyboard software locks
> Change passwords regularly and every
time a member of staff leaves. Ensure passwords are not written down and displayed
near the computer
> Always be wary of unsolicited e-mail
and disks as they may be infected with a virus. Use, and regularly update,
anti-virus software as part of your start-up procedure
> Keep back-up tapes or disks stored away
from the premises in case of theft, fire or other disaster. The back-up media
should be stored in a secure place.
Consideration should be given to securing all valuable equipment, which should
be located where it is least likely to attract attention from outside.
Items that are reasonably portable should be secured to a desk or part of
the building. There is a large range of security devices available on the
market eg security cages, lock down plates, cables etc. These can all help
to slow down thieves and prevent theft of equipment.
In addition there are a number of alarms which activate when the computer
is unplugged or when it is moved.
